Aligarius Timni was a member of the Institute of Arcane Study on Dominaria in Tamingazin, and an expert on the institute's collection of magical artifacts.

Description

Aligarius Timni was a centuries old, small white-haired man dressed in shapeless gray robes. He had a lengthy white beard and a large nose that dominated his narrow face. Despite his apparent age, he moved quickly and smoothly as he walked, and he had a kind yet firm bearing.[1]

After he came to Suderbod, Aligarius changed his style. On his head was a floppy hat in a shade of pink run through with veins of crimson. His white beard was trimmed short and forked in the Suderbod style, [1] closely reflecting the original art of the Prodigal Sorcerer card.

History

Aligarius Timni was a wizard of little wisdom, spending most of his life studying artifacts atop a mountain, with little practical experience in magic or combat. When a party led by Tagard Tarngold arrived at the Institute of Arcane Study, Aligarius, seeking excitement, helped Tagard in his bloodless coup to take control of Berimish, sending its defenders into a deep sleep.

Bored once more by the mundane politics that followed the coup, Aligarius fell under the influence of Suderbod Ambassador Ursal Daleel, who manipulated him with food laced with addictive, mind-altering spices, making him crave more while leaving him malnourished. This marked the beginning of the Betrayal of Tamingazin, a series of treacherous events that would ultimately shake the Valley to its core. In his brainwashed state, Aligarius assisted in the assassination of King Tagard and stole several powerful artifacts, including the Magewall Hub.

Aligarius then joined Ursal in traveling to Suderbod, altering his appearance to blend in with the nation. By aiding in the lifting of the Magewall, he enabled the Suder army's invasion of the Valley of Tamingazin. His desperation for nourishment grew as his mind and body withered, and in a feeding frenzy, he consumed food laced with a potent red spice, which left him reeling and vulnerable, but also struck with a certain clarity.

After Hemarch Solin's death at the hands of Kitrin, Aligarius managed to snap out of his stupor and escape with the Magewall Hub. As the Magewall was reactivated, Ursal attacked, but was killed by Recin and eaten by an attalo. Free from his brainwashing, Aligarius returned to the Institute of Arcane Study, profoundly humbled by his role in nearly destroying the Valley.[1]

Inspiration

The character was inspired by the flavor text for Prodigal Sorcerer, and his last name references the nickname Tim for this card. The story and character arc are also inspired by the prodigal son religious story trope.
