Shark is a creature type that is used for Magic cards that depict fish with a cartilaginous skeleton, five to seven-gill slits on the sides of the head, and pectoral fins that are not fused to the head.
History
The first card with the type was Giant Shark from The Dark. Thereafter the creature type merged into Fish with the Grand Creature Type Update, and all following sharks had that type (e.g. Hammerhead Shark, Shambleshark, Sharktocrab).
Shark was re-introduced as a creature type in Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths with Voracious Greatshark,[2] Pouncing Shoreshark, Shabraz, the Skyshark and Shark Typhoon. Seven older cards received errata.[3]
Aetherdrift; introduced shark-folk that continued the discard/draw theme from Brallin and Shabraz. The set also moved sharks into red for the first time as part of the Pirate theme associated with the Keelhaulers.
Storyline
Avishkar
Chordatans are humanoid sharks now endemic to Avishkar's coastal regions, having arrived via an instanced Omenpath to find themselves immediately atop the food chain. Perhaps a consequence of fate (or the outcome of some unknown multiversal mechanism), chordatans have a strong affinity for aether, so arriving on Avishkar has catapulted them to the apex of their potential. They describe their perception of aether as a call to adventure, power, speed, and glory. An invigorating substance, aether in all its forms is important in chordatan rituals, and liquid aether is used as fuel in their aethercycles.[4]
