Alpharael of Secundi, called Alph by his friends, is a human cleric from the Monasteriat in the Edge.[1]
Description
Alpharael is a young, light skinned human, with blond hair and dark-lined eyes.[2] He is an acolyte of the Monoist faith who sought to prove himself worthy of being blessed by the Immortal Faller.[3] He had a twin sister named Raphaella.[1] He carries an axe.[4]
History
Alpharael was born on Susur Secundi and given to the Monoist faith.[1] He spent his early life inside the Monoist monastery in the shadow of the Sotheran supervoid.[3]
When the Sunstar cruiser Dawnsire and the shieldship Candela approached the Sothera system to revive the star with a horizon javelin, Apharael's sister Raphaella undertook the Plummet to prove that an infalling inevitor could penetrate the Free Company's defenses. After Raphaella fell into Sothera, Alpharael joined a suicide mission to board the Dawnsire.[1]
After being shot by a bladiator in the attack, Alpharael realized that he didn't want to die. He threw away the singularity bead, collapsing the Solar Knight Vondam's head and Alpharael's right hand in the process. After a timeline revision by the Endstone, the bead only created a hole in Vondam's head and Apharael's hand, and the other Sunstar troops saved him from the effects of the cherazad caused by the attack. Seeing possibilities in his proven wish to survive, Astelli Captain Slats sentenced him to live and offered him a Hopelight aircraft to escape. Vondam later pledged to go after Alpharael to find out what had caused this timeline to come about.[4]
Pursued by Vondam's Palestar patrol ship, Alpharael crashed in the debris field of Kavaron. Unknowingly influenced by the Endstone, the rogues Sami and Tannuk came to his rescue and pulled him out of the wreckage.[2] Vondam had already concluded that Alpharael would become in possession of that object, and that it was Vondam's burden and doom to deliver the object to his superiors. Vondam theorized that the True Faith's mission in Sothera threatened the object, and that it, therefore, was calling out for a wielder, someone who could make use of its power. And that if it were to find that wielder, it would prevent the resurrection of Sothera. He further suspected that the object had manipulated events on the Dawnsire: Captain Slats's vision, Vondam's prophesied death, and his survival. All of it was intended to bring Alpharael away from his people and to the object.[5]
The Endstone manipulated a fight between the Sunstar Company and the defenders of Kavaron to help Sami, Tannuk, and Alpharael escape. Before that would happen, Vondam's squire Haliya managed to locate Alpharael and tried to force him to alter the past with the Endstone, so that she would be hurt by the singularity bead instead of her knight. When nothing happened, she tried to have them all obliterated by the Sunstar Company. However, Vondam refused to hurt Haliya and opened fire on the Kav citizens instead, slaughtering them all.[5] This convinced Haliya that the Summists' objectives in dealing with the Endstone were wrong, and she stopped fighting the crew, allowing Sami and Tannuk to fly their ship away from Kavaron.
In transit, Alpharael tried to help Haliya come to terms with her crisis of faith by explaining how he had let go of his Monoist beliefs, but she was resistant. Subsequently, they met Sami's employer Tezzeret, who wanted to learn the Endstone's objective. By allowing a dice roll to decide their heading, Tezzeret found that it wanted them to go to Infinite Guideline Station.[6] Alpharael decided to accompany the stone, since it had helped him live. Both the Summists and Monoists converged on Infinite Guideline to intercept the Endstone, and Alpharael and Haliya were forced to duel Vondam together, which they won when Alpharael used the hole in his hand to let Haliya dislocate his vertebrae and paralyze him. Subsequently, a revision of the Endstone allowed Alpharael to randomly guess a warp ferry password, which the crew used to escape the station and warp to the Wurmwall. Once they were there, the Endstone was taken away by the Vaar.[7]
