Monster is an obsolete creature type used for cards that depict creatures of strange or terrifying shape, often threatening forces of unnatural or extreme ugliness, deformity, wickedness, or cruelty.
History
Monster originally debuted as creature type in Legends on Moss Monster. It was reused in The Dark (Frankenstein's Monster) and Mercadian Masques (Tidal Kraken and Flailing Manticore). The Flailing Manticore illustrates that the type could also be used for phantastical animals combining features of animal and human form, like a centaur, griffin, or sphinx.
The type was used up until the Eighth Edition and then removed in the Grand Creature Type Update. The cards named above were changed to creature types as diverse as Zombie, Elemental, Kraken and Manticore, while the catch-all for large, terrifying, animal-like creatures became Beast.
Monsters returned in flavor for the Theros block, which was themed around heroes versus monsters. To represent the monsters, Theros introduced the Monstrosity keyword action. When it resolves, the creature becomes monstrous. Monsters were also a major theme for Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths where they were represented by mutated creatures. In the context of Dungeons & Dragons sets, a "monster" is any creature that can be encountered, fought, and potentially killed by players.
