Bear is a creature type most associated with green. It is used for cards depicting large carnivorous mammals with stocky legs, long snouts, small rounded ears, shaggy hair, clawed paws, and short tails.

History

The first card to bear the subtype it was Grizzly Bears (Alpha) in pluralized form (a 2/2 for 1 generic manaGreen mana). That card has become the prototype creature for bears, 2/2 creatures for 2 converted mana cost.

Balduvian Bears, Bear Cub, Forest Bear and Runeclaw Bear are all functional reprints of Grizzly Bears. There are many cards with the subtype Bear, most of which depict lifelike creatures. Exceptions to the rule are the Phantasmal Bear which is also an Illusion, Spectral Bears and Ursine Fylgja which are Spirits as well as Bears, and the Werebear which is a Lycanthrope (a Human Bear Druid).

The first legendary bear was created by popular request for Core Set 2019: Goreclaw, Terror of Qal Sisma[2] However, the card was a Ferocious enabler or lord, which disappointed those who wished to play it with as many bears as possible[3] - including the 2/2-sized versions. This lead to the creation of Ayula, Queen Among Bears, and likely influenced Savage Swipe.
