The Thaw[1], also known as the Flood Age[2][3] or Flood Ages[4], the Age of Storms[5][6], the Great Thaw[7], the Age of Plagues[6] and the Age of Flowers[6], is an era in Dominaria's history that began with the casting of the World Spell by the planeswalker Freyalise.
Description
The Flood Ages (2934 to 3000 AR)
Little is known of what happened in this era save for the continent of Terisiare, where powerful alliances sprung up in the wake of the Ice Age's ending and Lim-Dûl's defeat. Kjeldor and Balduvia came together as the kingdom of New Argive, while the Flooding of Terisiare forced the elves of Fyndhorn to migrate to their new home of Yavimaya.
The Thaw was a time of great upheaval. Only some areas of Terisiare, including the kingdom of Almaaz, were mostly unaffected by great floods which destroyed vast stretches of the continent, splitting it into an archipelago of large islands. Disease flourished due to the higher temperatures, and the plague spread across the southern part of the continent, especially in the city of Krov. Soldev's machines rose against their masters, destroying the once-great city and scattering its people.
Shortly after the World Spell, the Cult of Rimewind, led by Heidar, tried to halt and undo the Thaw with their ice magic but ultimately failed due to the alliance of New Argive and Yavimaya, as well as betrayal within their ranks. Following this conflict, New Argive's control over the continent was secured, the Order of Stromgald was finally defeated, and relative peace reigned in Terisiare until the Phyrexian Invasion of Dominaria.
One known book or poem from this period is The Dynasty of Winter Kings.
The Empty Quarter (3000 to 3285 AR)
After the Flooding of Terisiare, a period of relative peace settled over Dominaria, and this period is somewhat erroneously known as "the Empty Quarter". Notable Dominarian events in this time include the Gathering and breaking of the Sages of Minorad, the release and banishment of the Beast of the Hours, the first annual Festival of the Arena, the Sheoltun Occupation, the extermination of all Sleeper agents on Dominaria by Urza, the Sacrifice at Koilos, the Uprising in Epityr, and Nicol Bolas usurping power in Madara.
However, the "Empty Quarter" was far from peaceful on several other planes, which had dramatic and even cataclysmic events take place in the same period. This included the Wizards' War on Shandalar, the Great War and ringing of the Apocalypse Chime on Ulgrotha, the Kami War on Kamigawa, and the Khanfall of Tarkir.
The end of the Thaw
In 3285 AR, the Thaw era ended when Urza founded the Tolarian Academy, officially starting the plane's War with Phyrexia, which would dominate events on Dominaria for the next millennium.
