Harpy is a seldom used black and blue creature type used for cards that depict ravenous, filthy monsters that have a woman's head and a bird's body.
History
The first card named Harpy was Screeching Harpy in Tempest, but it had the subtype Beast. Two other cards followed: Molting Harpy in Mercadian Masques (which was only a Mercenary) and the multicolored Cavern Harpy in Planeshift (a Beast again).
In the Grand Creature Type Update the Harpy became specifically introduced as an additional subtype for these three cards.[1] After that, no Harpy was printed until the Theros block.
Storyline
Theros
The harpies of Theros are monstrous bird-women that behave like vultures or corvids, attacking the weak and stealing objects.[2]
Ixalan
Harpies on Ixalan resemble owls rather than vultures. They are the servants of Ixalan's demons and usually live in rocky cliffs near the sea.[3] They are thought to have once been Sirens due to their close resemblance. Their bite carries dangerous diseases.
