Gaea's Liege is an obsolete two-word creature type for an avatar of Gaea.

History

Gaea's Liege debuted as a creature type in Limited Edition Alpha on the eponymous card Gaea's Liege. It was physically reprinted with the type in subsequent core sets up through Fourth Edition. The type was later dropped in the Grand Creature Type Update, and it was given errata to be an Avatar.[1] The original card was eventually reprinted with its new type line with the release of Time Spiral as a Timeshifted card as well as in the 30th Anniversary Edition. It was later released as a promotional card for the Wizards Play Network in Q4 of 2024 with new art.[2]

Description

Gaea's Liege was a Maro-Sorcerer of the Whispering Woods and an avatar of Gaea, the worldsoul of Dominaria. He appears as a male human with long hair, a long beard, and two antlers protruding from his head. He was called the "Great Spirit of the Forest" by Greensleeves and called the "Liege of Gaea" by Chaney. He would eventually be replaced by Greensleeves herself.[3][4][5] For his card, he has a variable power & toughness that changes when attacking or not attacking. When attacking, his power and toughness are equal to the number of Forests the player controls. When attacking, its power and toughness are equal to the number of Forests the defending player controls. He also has an activated ability to turn a land into a Forest for as long as he remains on the battlefield.
