The C'tan are the oldest intelligent beings in existence. In their natural form they are etheric creatures of pure energy who spread themselves over the surface of a star, absorbing its solar energy to feed. They were given physical form by the Necrontyr using a living metal called necrodermis. In turn, they helped transfer the Necrontyr into robotic bodies of the same material using the process of Biotransference — creating (and enslaving) the Necrons to conquer the universe.

The Necrons, led by Szarekh, the Silent King, eventually turned on the C'tan for their betrayal. As punishment, the Necrons broke the C'tan into shards and held them within multi-dimensional prisons known as Tesseract Labyrinths to later be used as unwilling power sources and weapons.
