Serpent is a mainly blue creature type used for cards that depict big limbless reptiles with large heads. Unlike the similar landbound wurms, the snake-like serpents live in the sea.
The first card to bear the type was Sea Serpent in Alpha. More than twenty blue serpents have been printed. Other examples include Kukemssa Serpent, Denizen of the Deep and Harbor Serpent.
Storyline
Alara
Alaran serpents mainly live in the seas of Esper. Like all lifeforms on that shard, they are infused with Etherium to varying degrees. A species known as sluice serpents are native to the sludge-filled Cesspools, swimming under the surface and eating whatever moves.[1]
Amonkhet
Serpents are found within the Luxa River on Amonkhet.
When Razaketh transformed the Luxa into blood, most serpents either died or became highly aggressive.
Dominaria
Dominarian Serpents lived in the large oceans, often in the deep sea, and were sometimes tamed by Merfolk. Regions, where they came near the coast, were Tolaria, Otaria, and Jamuura.
During the Ice Age, large Serpents inhabited the snow, living similar to Hellions and Wurms.
Eldraine
Though rarely seen, serpents are native to the lochs of Eldraine. Their appearance and presentation are based on the Loch Ness Monster.
Ikoria
Serpents can be found all over Ikoria, from the skies above to the molten flows around Lavabrink. As typical for the plane, Ikorian serpents incorporate aspects of other creatures, including Birds and Elementals.
Innistrad
Innistradi serpents are bioluminescent and highly aggressive. Adult serpents lay their eggs in otherwise dangerous and inaccessible underwater locations, as serpent hatchlings are already formidable combatants at birth.
Kaladesh
Kaladeshi serpents live in the sea and are known to hunt artifice and collect it in large quantities.
Mirrodin
Serpents were native to the Quicksilver Sea on Mirrodin. The Vedalken sometimes utilized them as guardians of their spires.
Rath
Serpents like the Sliptide Serpent existed in the Rootwater. Their fate following the Rathi Overlay is unknown.
Tarkir
In the new timeline of Tarkir, serpents are known to inhabit the waters surrounding the Jeskai-controlled island of Dirgur.
Theros
Serpents like the Floodtide Serpent are among the sea monsters that exist in the seas of Theros. Like krakens, they are associated with Thassa.
Ulgrotha
Within the deep sea of Ulgrotha, the Marjhan lives. This serpent resembles an anglerfish and is known to hunt whales.
Zendikar
Zendikari Serpents mostly live away from the continents within the sea. Exceptions are the Shoal Serpent, who come near the coasts of Ondu. They are sometimes compared to “a reef that runs aground on ships". Serpents also cluster around the island of Jwar, defending their territory viciously.[2]
