The Quicksilver Sea was a vast, shimmering expanse of liquid metal located on the surface of Mirrodin. Suspended above it hung the ominous Eye of Doom. Originally a center of vedalken and Neurok civilization, the sea later became one of the earliest regions to succumb to Phyrexian corruption. Following the Phyrexian takeover of the plane, the Quicksilver Sea was drained into the Surgical Bay, a new sphere in the layered structure of New Phyrexia.

Description

Though visually similar to mercury, the Quicksilver Sea was composed of a distinct metallic liquid called "quicksilver".[1] Rising from its depths were the Vedalken Spires, towering islands of solid metal, likely tin, that reached hundreds of meters into the sky. Catwalks and bridges connected these spires, which housed chambers, balconies, and staircases. These structures served as homes for the vedalken and their Neurok assistants.

The city of Lumengrid, built on one of the larger spires near the sea's shore, served as the cultural and political center of blue-aligned Mirrans. It contained many notable locations, including the Pool of Knowledge, a site of intellectual and mystical significance, and the hidden Blue Lacuna beneath it. Nearby settlements such as Medev housed the Neurok population in tin dwellings along the coast.

Amid the sea itself was the Titan Forge, an enormous device used to construct colossal metallic constructs. The forge stood within a strange anomaly—a large circular clearing in the quicksilver where the liquid did not flow, as though repelled by an unseen force.[2]

As Phyrexian corruption spread from regions like the Mephidross, the waters of the Quicksilver Sea were among the first to be widely infected.[3] Glistening oil merged with the quicksilver, creating a virulent substance that corroded flesh and metal alike. These corrupted waters came to be known as the Darkslick. Within this environment, agents of the Progress Engine constructed submerged laboratories and designed biomechanical sea creatures as part of their grotesque experiments.

After the construction of New Phyrexia’s nine-layered structure, the original surface of Mirrodin was reclassified as the Mirrex. The Quicksilver Sea was transplanted to the fifth sphere and transformed into the Surgical Bay.[4][5]

Known locations

Prior to Phyrexia’s conquest, the Quicksilver Sea was the heart of vedalken and Neurok life, featuring:

  • The Vedalken Spires (also called Quicksilver Spires)
  • Lumengrid, capital of vedalken and Neurok society
    • The Grand Assembly Chamber, seat of the vedalken Synod
    • The Pool of Knowledge, source of mystical serum and entrance to the Blue Lacuna
  • The Titan Forge, a construct found within a suspended zone of still quicksilver
