Fox is a white creature type used for cards depicting carnivorous mammals, characteristically having upright ears, a pointed snout, and a long bushy tail. Foxes are related to dogs and wolves.

History

For a long time Arctic Foxes from Ice Age was the only existing Fox card. This changed when the Kitsune from Kamigawa were introduced.

After Innistrad added the Silverchase Fox and Theros Vulpine Goliath, the creature type became more common but usually represented fox animals rather than fox-folk.

The first token fox was introduced in Modern Horizons III on Genku, Future Shaper.

Kitsune

Kitsune in the Neon Dynasty world guide

The Kitsune (KIT-soo-nay;[1] Japanese: (きつね) ; Kamigawan: kitsune-bito, lit. "foxfolk") of Kamigawa are cunning, tricksy masters of diplomacy and swordsmanship. They are curious and fond of playing pranks, mostly harmless ones for their own amusement. They tend to live in large, close-knit family clans related through blood and marriage. Kitsune are proud of their lineages and are able to trace their ancestry back through multiple generations.

The more a kitsune experiences, the more tails they grow, with the wisest elders having nine tails. The average kitsune is slighter and shorter than a human, with the top of their head coming up to person's chin. They have white fur with red markings.

The kitsune are most commonly found in the Imperial court.

In the original block, kitsune were portrayed not with conventional fox heads, but rather kabuki kitsune masks. In Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty their heads are more conventionally fox-like, but retain kabuki mask elements.

Storyline

Dominaria

Foxes were one of the animals to survive during the Ice Age (Arctic Foxes).

Eldraine

Giant foxes are used as mounts by Elves on the plane of Eldraine (Maraleaf Rider, Wildborn Preserver, Wildwood Tracker). Some foxes have the ability to fly (Flutterfox). The elves of Redtooth Keep are cursed to become werefoxes at night.

Kaladesh

Foxes inspired some of the works made by lifecrafters (Filigree Familiar), though no native foxes have appeared.

Kamigawa

Even though the fox-folk of Kamigawa live within the Jukai Forest, they have the closest relations with the humans.[2] Even more so than the daimyo's Soratami advisors. Kitsune are long-lived beings with very strong beliefs in their traditions. These Kitsune always have a creature class beside the Fox subtype.

Ikoria

Ikoria features elemental foxes (Zirda, the Dawnwaker).

Innistrad

On expeditions through Ashmouth, the hunters of Devilthorn Lodge rely on the cleverness of foxes to counteract the mischief of devils (Devilthorn Fox).

Shenmeng

Some foxes of Shenmeng are sapient and appear in spirit form (e.g. Nine-Tail White Fox). It's still unknown if any regular foxes exist on this plane.

Theros

In Setessa, foxes feed on hydras, giants, and massive serpents becoming giants (Vulpine Goliath). The fox is also the symbol for Bassara Tower, a watchtower near the Summer Nexus.[3]
