Pearl-Ear was a kitsune diplomat, and a long-time ambassador at daimyo Konda's court in Eiganjo.[1]

Description

Pearl-Ear was a sister of kitsune ranger Sharp-Ear. She and her brother had six brothers and nine sisters.[2]

She was also a friend of Yoshino, the mother of Princess Michiko Konda, and the princess's tutor. For Michiko, she was like a strict yet doting aunt. By the end of the Kami War, she and her younger brother Sharp-Ear had been siblings for almost 100 years.[3]

History

Pearl-Ear was present for the birth of Michiko Konda, comforting her friend Yoshino, Konda's concubine and Michiko's mother after the birth. She brought the news of his daughter's birth to the Daimyo Takeshi Konda, but he was distracted by other events that night and was acting strange. Pearl-Ear noticed a new shrine to Kyodai set up, though she did not know its name. She also saw that the shrine to the Myojin of Cleansing Fire was crying actual tears. Konda himself was babbling about things that Pearl-Ear could not comprehend, but she felt a terrible portent from his words and the mood of the room and fled from there in fear.[2]

When Michiko was 20 years old, she snuck away from Eiganjo together with her friends Riko and Choryu. They came to Pearl-Ear's village of Sugi Hayashi, but Michiko was taken away by the rogue Toshiro Umezawa.[2] Pearl-Ear's failure to keep the princess safe earned her imprisoned in the Daimyo's tower, and she was eventually banished from Eiganjo altogether. Pearl-Ear traveled back to her village and found it in ruins after a sack by an akki army. She found an encampment nearby where the refugees had settled, including her brother, Sharp-Ear. Toshi reappeared with Michiko in tow, and Pearl-Ear was present when O-Kagachi appeared over the Jukai in search of Kyodai. She witnessed the climactic battle above the boughs, as well as the Daimyo's ultimate fate.[3]
