Wyvern is an obsolete creature subtype that depicted flying reptiles with a bird-like gait and two legs, smaller than the four-legged Dragons but larger than Drakes.
Description
Wyvern debuted as a creature type in Mirage for the card Cerulean Wyvern. It was later consolidated into the Drake subtype with the release of Sixth Edition. The change was only made on the Oracle as the original has never been reprinted.
Storyline
Wyverns can theoretically be found on any plane though thus far have been only seen on Dominaria, the former plane of Rath, and Vryn.
Dominaria
Dominaria is home to the Cerulean Wyverns from Jamuraa. They have sky-blue scales that allow them to surprise their prey from above on cloudless days.
Rath
Rath was home to several types of Wyvern. The Sabertooth Wyverns were known for their exceptionally large canine teeth. The Flowstone Wyverns were made of stone while the Silver Wyvern had metallic scales.
Vyrn
Vyrn is home to the Thunderclap Wyverns which are known for creating sounds of thunder serving as a warning of their arrival.
Trivia
- In English, Scottish, and Irish heraldry, wyverns are defined as distinct entities from dragons. The key difference has been that a wyvern has two legs, whereas a dragon has four. This distinction is not commonly observed in the heraldry of other European countries, where two-legged dragon creatures are simply called dragons. Thus far all Wyvern cards have had 2 legs.
