Archer is a creature class for cards that depict combatants who specialize in fighting with bows and arrows.

Description

In-game, archers often have the reach ability or abilities that allow them to deal damage directly to creatures, usually those with flying. Archers are centered in white and green.

History

Elvish Archers from Alpha is retroactively the first Archer to see print, but when it was released the type line simply said "Summon Elves". The first card to feature the type was D'Avenant Archer from Legends. The other early cards with the type were Femeref Archers from Mirage ("Summon Archers") and Longbow Archer from Visions .

For much of the game's history, "Archer" was not a supported creature type, and preexisting archers (or cards depicting archers) were labeled as soldiers from Tempest going forward. With Mirrodin and the Grand Creature Type Update the archer type was reinstated. Some archers that had been featured as soldiers now bear both creature types.
