type:"Legend"

Legend is an obsolete creature type.

Only one creature of the same name, with this creature type, could be in play at the same time. For a while, they were even on the restricted list, meaning there could be only one creature of the same name in each deck.[1] It was one of two subtypes with rules baggage, alongside Walls.

Legend was replaced by the supertype legendary in Champions of Kamigawa.[2]

History

The type was introduced in the eponymous set Legends; all, and only, multicolored creatures were typed "Summon Legend", and it superseded the other creature types due to the rules. The Elder Dragons were unique in that they had three types to begin with. When the templating changed to "Creature —" rather than "Summon X", those in Portal Three Kingdoms lacked a subtype.

Upon the release of Urza's Destiny, some new Legends received secondary types, especially those that already had typal support such as Rofellos, Llanowar Emissary's Elf or Rayne, Academy Chancellor's Wizard. Volrath, the Fallen was among those that did not, as its later types Phyrexian Shapeshifter had no mechanical reference. As creature types got more relevance, more Legends received types to go with them.

The last block to have Legend as a subtype was Mirrodin block, as part of the removal of typed baggage, alongside giving Walls their defender keyword. During this time, any printed as purely Legend were given their creature subtypes in an Oracle update. Some have never received reprints and the only indication of their subtype is on the database.
