Army is a black token-only creature class introduced in War of the Spark, intrinsically tied with the Amass keyword action.[1][2] Originally, it was combined with Zombie, as in Zombie Army.[3]
Description
During the resolution of amassing [subtype] N, a player checks if they already control an Army. If they don't, they create a 0/0 Army token with the listed secondary subtype. Then the player puts N +1/+1 counters on an Army. The Army functions together much like how R&D makes single creature cards that are flavored as a group of beings.[4]
Amass was designed so you'd control one Army at most at any given time, but there are several ways around this. You could copy an Army you control, take control of anothers' Army or maybe you control a creature with all creature types.
While Army is the marker for the Amass mechanic to work, Mark Rosewater expressed that Amass could create an Army of another creature type, using errata on the Amass cards in War of the Spark.[5][6] In The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth, Army was paired with Orcs.[7] The next set, Commander Masters, added Amass Slivers, flavorfully pairing it with Afflict. Older cards received an update to now say "amass Zombies N."[8] The mechanic now appends race subtypes to the Army when cross-set Amassers are combined.
