Cockatrice was originally a green creature type that was only used once, for the card Cockatrice in Alpha. Cockatrices are flying creatures that can turn their enemies to stone, much like Basilisks. They have lithe, feathery, serpentine bodies with the head of a bird, two legs, and two wings.

In Magic 2014 it finally returned as a black creature (Deathgaze Cockatrice). It was argued that though deathtouch suited both colors, green didn't get flying creatures anymore, making black the easiest fit with both deathtouch and flying.[1] Journey into Nyx added the green/blue Fleetfeather Cockatrice, using blue to justify the flying.
