Jackal is a creature type. It is used for canine creatures that resemble real-world jackals.
History
Jackal was first printed on Hurr Jackal in Arabian Nights and Trained Jackal in Portal Three Kingdoms. However, support for the creature type dropped off early, with both Dauthi Jackal and Jackal Pup printing with the type hound instead.
During the Grand Creature Type Update, the type was formally removed from the rules, and the earlier jackal cards became hounds. Jackal Familiar, printed in Magic 2010, was also printed as a hound.
Jackal became a supported creature type again with the release of Amonkhet. All cards with the word "jackal" in their name received that subtype instead of hound, including the enchantment Lurking Jackals, which becomes a creature of that type when its trigger is fulfilled.[1]
Khenra
The Anubis-inspired Khenra of Amonkhet are tall and lean, with heads closely resembling jackals. Their snouts are long and sharp, and their angular ears rise straight above their heads. Their bodies are covered in dark, sleek hair that ranges from the brown of the desert sands to ebony black. Despite their sharp teeth, they consider biting to be an uncouth and unworthy combat tactic.[2]
Nearly every khenra is born a fraternal or identical twin, and a pair of khenra twins form an extremely close emotional bond unknown to most other residents of Amonkhet. The rare khenra who are born without twins are believed to have killed their siblings in the womb and are thus viewed as natural-born initiates, sure to achieve a glorified death in the Trial of Zeal.[3] Their instinctual connection lends itself well to their preferred fighting style.[4]
Most khenra worship Hazoret, who is known to favor them among her viziers. Other khenra choose to distance themselves from Hazoret and the reckless battle frenzy she encourages. They devote themselves instead to honing their physical strength, resilience, and adaptability, inspired and guided by the teachings of Rhonas. These khenra have a great fondness for wrestling (or tussling, as they often call it), and they keep careful track of the matches they win and lose against other initiates. They often seek matches against minotaurs, enjoying the challenge of pitting their sinewy strength against the brute muscle of larger and heavier opponents.
As with every race on Amonkhet, zombie Khenra exist as regular zombies, as mummies, and as Eternals. Amongst the survivors after the fall of Naktamun, some were compleated during the Phyrexian invasion.
Notable Jackals
- Dominaria
- Jackal Pup (Tempest), The star of a deck that revolutionized how Magic was played. Sligh came out of nowhere to dominate the tournament world and introduce people to the previously unheard-of concept of mana curve.
