Hazoret is the jackal-headed Amonkheti god of zeal, fervor, and enduring hope. She presided over the final trial in the city of Naktamun, guiding initiates through their ultimate test of faith and courage. With her blazing spear, she struck down the victorious to grant them the long-promised reward of the God-Pharaoh's embrace in the afterlife, a fate that once symbolized honor and divine approval. After the ruinous Hour of Devastation, Hazoret alone survived the massacre of the pantheon, defying despair to become known as the God-Survivor, the last guardian of her people's spirit and their enduring link to the divine.[1][2]

Description

Hazoret’s ideal of zeal embodies not just religious fervor but also unyielding emotional fire, righteous wrath, and a drive to protect those who stand with her. For Hazoret, it was never enough for initiates to merely desire paradise — they had to prove their worth through ferocious struggle, channeling devotion into combat that forged them into worthy souls. Under Nicol Bolas's deception, Hazoret believed herself to be crafted from the same divine spark as the Second Sun, burning with the fire of the God-Pharaoh's breath.[3] To her, the initiates who survived the first four trials were her cherished children, whom she honored in glorious celebration before personally delivering them to what she believed was an exalted afterlife.

In the age before Bolas's corruption, Hazoret's flame also represented compassion, inspiration, and the warmth that binds a community together — a beacon of unity and courage in a harsh, desert-bound world.[4] Her strength came not only from her spear but from the fire she lit within mortal hearts.

Sometime during the plane's tumultuous wars, Hazoret's injured arm was either replaced or reinforced with Lazotep, the strange blue mineral that came to symbolize both undeath and resilience on Amonkhet. Whether this occurred during the War of the Spark or the later Phyrexian Invasion remains uncertain, but it stands as a testament to her will to survive and adapt.

Hazoret's Monument once towered proudly within Naktamun, a place where initiates knelt in prayer before facing their final, glorious trial.

History

The Fervent.

Hour of Devastation

During the Hour of Devastation, Hazoret fought to protect the citizens of Naktamun, hoping that the God-Pharaoh would come and end the destruction. However, after Nicol Bolas's arrival, Bontu revealed that she had helped the dragon planeswalker conquer Amonkhet long ago, due to her ambition. Bolas ordered Bontu to defeat Hazoret. But after she brought the god of zeal before the God-Pharaoh, Bolas betrayed and killed Bontu. Hazoret now remains the only living god of Amonkhet.[5] After engaging the Scorpion God and being severely wounded, Hazoret managed to weaken its armor enough for Samut and the others to finish it off. Her thanking Samut caused the latter enough joy to ignite her spark. After Samut planeswalked away from Amonkhet and then returned, Hazoret took the remaining survivors of Naktamun and went with them into the desert, swearing to protect them as long as she drew breath. For this, she became known as Hazoret, the God-Survivor and mother of the mortals of Amonkhet.[2]

The God-Survivor.

War of the Spark

During the War of the Spark, Hazoret had established a camp for the survivors near the ruins of Naktamun, which was protected from the Locust and Scarab Gods and their servants with a barrier similar to nature to the Hekma. She was visited by a group of planeswalkers seeking her help in the fight against Bolas. She spoke to Dack Fayden and told him that he was a better person than he thought, and told him to face his destiny back on Ravnica. Hazoret lent her spear as a weapon to take down Bolas, which was immense and required multiple planeswalkers to wield. Karn was able to grasp the weapon and transport it to Ravnica, where he and Angrath used it against Bolas's Dreadhorde. Later, the spear was used by Niv-Mizzet in the climactic battle with Nicol Bolas.[6]

With the Eternals out of the city, Hazoret and the other survivors reclaimed Naktamun, raised the Hekma, and began to rebuild.[7]

Fighting the Phyrexians

Upon hearing of the news of the Phyrexian threat to the Multiverse, Samut went into hiding with Hazoret and the survivors of Naktamun, hoping to evade Phyrexian notice, but it turned out to be futile.[8][9] Those who had survived Nicol Bolas's ravaging of their plane, however, were tough and resourceful, and as soon as they gathered their bearings, they struck back with a vicious plan that relied heavily on Hazoret, their protector god, with Djeru as her loyal lieutenant.

To their surprise, when they arrived at Naktamun, they found the Scarab God and Locust God already there, engaged with the invaders.[9] With the insect gods' undead hordes distracting the Phyrexians, Hazoret used her flaming spear to ignite the glistening oil within the Phyrexians' veins. As they writhed in agony, Djeru led a crop of elite fighters to dismember them, making sure they were out of the picture for good. Though Hazoret was badly wounded, the Amonkheti were victorious.[10] In the aftermath, the inscrutable insect gods departed for the deep desert without a word.

Scouring the Broken Lands

Even after the end of the invasion, Hazoret maintains her austere distance from the people of Amonkhet, taking only small cadres of elite warriors to scout the Broken Lands, stalking the Locust God and the Scarab God and their Chitin Court.[11] They send word back to Naktamun for reinforcements, depositing recovered artifacts of pre-Bolas Amonkhet and new charts of the Broken Lands. Hazoret alone led survivors through the desert to find Ketramose and Sab-Sunen and helped to manifest them. She has since set out to search for more of her kin, working to counter the machinations of the Chitin Court.[10] The people call her "Godseeker" and keep her and her cohort in their prayers.

She is the last of the old pantheon, revered by the Amonkheti for her resilience and steadfast presence throughout their darkest hours.

Inspiration

Hazoret's form and mythic role draw heavily from ancient Egyptian deities, most clearly Anubis, the jackal-headed god associated with mummification, the desert, and the care of souls in the afterlife. Like Anubis, Hazoret stands as a gatekeeper between the mortal world and what lies beyond, ensuring the worthy are judged and guided onward. Her act of delivering the final blow resembles Set, the storm and desert god who, through conflict and sacrifice, played a crucial role in the cycle of death and rebirth by slaying Osiris.

Her fierce, solar aspect and warrior's zeal also reflect Sekhmet, the lioness goddess of fire and vengeance, who unleashed divine wrath upon humanity when called upon by Ra. As the last untainted deity of Amonkhet's original pantheon and a figure associated with fire and the sun, Hazoret's symbolism echoes the Aten, the radiant solar disk worshipped during Egypt's brief experiment with monotheism under Akhenaten — an isolated beacon of divine light standing alone above all others.

In the post-Bolas era, Hazoret's legend has only grown more complex: part protector, part avenger, and part living relic of a world that refuses to die.
