Their primary defense mechanism is to flee while ejecting an ink cloud into the water. Many octopi are known to employ natural camouflage to help elude intruders. They are not to be confused with the closely related nautili, squids or kraken. Octopi are intelligent creatures, but lack the sentience of their humanoid versions the cephalids.
There are only five cards with the creature type Octopus. The first creature to bear the type was Giant Octopus from Portal and Starter 1999. It was followed by Lorthos, the Tidemaker from Zendikar, Sealock Monster and Godhunter Octopus from the Theros block, and Elder Deep-Fiend from Eldritch Moon.
