Shell counter are a type of counter introduced in Weatherlight. They act as upkeep tracking for a creature becoming more powerful after several turns.

Description

Shell counters first appeared on Roc Hatchling in Weatherlight. It enters the battlefield with 4 shell counters on it with one being removed on each upkeep. After all shell counters are removed, the creature gains additional power/toughness and flying. This represents the creature breaking out of its shell to finish hatching.

Trivia

In Magic Online, the counter is colored orange as its considered a negative effect and it shares an icon with Egg, Hatchling, Hoofprint, and Prey counters.[1]
