Fate counters are a type of counter introduced in Mirrodin. They act as a marker on a permanent for the use of another ability.

Description

Fate counters first appeared on Oblivion Stone in Mirrodin and re-printed in various other sets. The artifact could add Fate counters to permanents and another to sacrifice itself destroying all permanents without Fate counters. The counter type re-appeared again on Triad of Fates in Theros where it could place Fate counters on creatures and other abilities to exile those creatures either temporarily or in exchange for drawing two cards. While there are no abilities gained or produced by fate counters, both cards use them as a way to "save" creatures marked. Triad of Fates is a cheap source of fate counters for the more impactful result of Oblivion Stone, while Oblivion Stone can let Triad of Fates protect itself with the second ability.
