Incarnation counters are a type of counter introduced in Core Set 2021. They act as a replacement for player damage which leads to an alternate loss condition.

Description

Incarnation counters first appeared on Nine Lives in Core Set 2021. It is an enchantment that prevents damage from being done to the player in exchange for adding an Incarnation counter to it. If the number of counters reaches nine then the enchantment is exiled. If the enchantment leaves the battlefield, the player loses the game. This represents the common saying that a cat has nine lives with each counter representing an incarnation or Life of the player.
