Hatchling counters are a type of counter introduced in Legends. They have represented creatures hatching from an egg via the ability and the transform mechanic.
Description
Hatchling counters first appeared on Triassic Egg in Legends where they originally appeared as unnamed counters before being given errata into Hatchling counters. It was an artifact with an activated ability to add Hatchling counters to it and which could then be sacrificed once two or more counters are on it. The sacrifice then allows the player to either move a creature from the player's hand or graveyard to the battlefield. This represents the creature hatching from the egg.
The counters returned on Ludevic's Test Subject in Innistrad where it acted as a counter for the transform mechanic. It had an ability to put the Hatchling counters on it until 5 of them triggers the transformation from a Lizard Egg to Ludevic's Abomination, a Lizard Horror.
Trivia
- In Magic Online, the counter is colored green as its considered a positive effect and it shares an icon with Egg, Hoofprint, Prey, and Shell counters.[1]
- Originally, Triassic Egg was given errata to have Incubation counters before being re-printed later as Hatchling counters.
