Hit counters are a type of counter introduced in Guilds of Ravnica. They have been related to Assassins marking cards that get exiled and which can be counted for a future effect.

Description

Hit counters first appeared on Etrata, the Silencer in Guilds of Ravnica. Whenever she dealt damage to a player, she would exile one of their creatures with a Hit counter on it. The player would then lose the game if they had 3 or more exiled cards with Hit counters on them. This represented the assassin killing the player.

The counters returned in New Capenna Commander on Mari, the Killing Quill which would exile and put a Hit counter on any opponent creature that dies. It then gave Assassins, Mercenaries, and Rogues the ability to remove a Hit counter whenever they dealt damage to the player and gain a card and two Treasure tokens. Ravenloft Adventurer from Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate had a similar effect of exiling an opponent's creatures with a Hit counter when they died. In this, the player needs to complete a Dungeon which would cause the opponent to lose 1 life for each exiled card with a Hit counter whenever the creature attacks.
