Varryvort is a meticulous and respected goblin chemister who serves as Ral Zarek's chief chemister within the Izzet League. Best known for overseeing the construction of the Interplanar Beacon on Ravnica, Varryvort was instrumental in ensuring the device's success as part of Niv-Mizzet's contingency plan against Nicol Bolas. Though dedicated and careful in his duties, Varryvort's work became a point of infiltration for the shapeshifting intrigues of House Dimir.

Description

Chief Chemister Varryvort is a brilliant and detail-oriented goblin inventor employed by the Izzet League, the guild renowned for its arcane experiments and daring magical research. As Ral Zarek's trusted subordinate, Varryvort takes immense pride in his craft, ensuring that each mechanism he oversees is both innovative and reliable. He is described as diligent and respectful, always showing proper deference to his superiors, bowing and addressing Ral with formality. Varryvort's cautious nature is evident in his insistence on involving Ral directly in the final security lockout sequence for the Interplanar Beacon, highlighting his commitment to safety and the integrity of their inventions. His behavior suggests not just technical brilliance but a profound sense of responsibility toward his fellow Izzet and the broader mission of protecting the plane.

History

Varryvort's most notable contribution came during the construction of the Interplanar Beacon, a massive arcane structure designed as a fallback measure in Niv-Mizzet's larger plan to counter Nicol Bolas's schemes. The beacon, with its complex network of resonators and mana conduits, required constant supervision, precise calibration, and unwavering attention to detail—responsibilities that fell to Varryvort as head of operations. His supervision was critical to ensuring that the device would function flawlessly should Ravnica's guilds fail to unite under the Living Guildpact.[1]

Unfortunately, Varryvort's trusted position made him a target for infiltration by House Dimir. At a pivotal moment, the goblin was abducted and impersonated by Lazav, the enigmatic shapeshifter and master spy who leads the Dimir. Lazav assumed Varryvort’s form to gain access to the Izzet’s inner circle and to eavesdrop on the crucial summit where the leaders of the Ten Guilds strategized against Bolas’s invasion. Thankfully, Varryvort himself was not killed but merely incapacitated during Lazav’s deception. The revelation that Lazav had taken his place introduced a new layer of paranoia and intrigue, forcing Ral and the other guildmasters to question how secure their plans truly were and how far Dimir’s influence extended within their ranks.[2]
