Grimbly Wothis is a minotaur and Merret's boss, a tough dock overseer. He's also the husband of Jitka Wothis.

Description

Appearance

Grimbly Wothis, a minotaur who serves in the covert operations of House Dimir, cuts an imposing figure with his half-bull, half-man physique. He is robust and has a no-nonsense demeanor. His presence is formidable, with horns that scrape against stacked crates and a deep, roaring laugh that matches the blare of a foghorn. Physically, Grimbly is built with a wide chest and massive, furred hands, underscoring his strength and authority among the dockworkers of Ravnica. His appearance suggests a rugged and practical nature, suited to the gritty work of overseeing covert operations and managing the business interests of House Dimir.

Personality

Grimbly Wothis is depicted as stern, demanding, and straightforward in his dealings. He exhibits a no-nonsense attitude, expecting efficiency and results from his subordinates like Merret. His demeanor implies a pragmatic approach to his responsibilities, prioritizing success and profit over sentiment or personal hardships. Despite his toughness, he also shows moments of shrewdness and strategic thinking, such as using fog cover to impress potential investors.

History

Grimbly Wothis became involved with Merret's affairs after a botched job involving a surveillance fly and a prized bottle of Buttress South Whiskey. Merret, in a moment of greed, almost snatched the bottle for himself but thought better of it just as Wothis appeared. The minotaur boss, suspicious but distracted by other matters, tasked Merret with clearing fog from the harbor for an investor. Despite his doubts, Merret managed to use a sudden surge of magical ability to clear the fog partially, impressing Wothis momentarily.

Later that evening, Merret, desperate to improve his family's fortunes, broke into Wothis's home seeking valuables. There, he encountered Wothis's formidable minotaur wife Jitka, and narrowly avoided detection after clumsily spilling magical elixir. However, with the elixir's magic now in him, Merret inadvertently cast a spell of invisibility on himself, evading detection.

The next day at work, Merret's overconfidence led to disaster when he accidentally caused a crate to fall toward Wothis and his investor. Wothis managed to save the investor by pushing him into the river, but both ended up soaked and furious with Merret. Fearing retaliation, Merret fled home to his family, realizing the dire consequences of his actions for them.

At home, tensions escalated when Wothis tracked Merret down, demanding retribution for the damages. He threatened Merret's family, pushing Merret to retaliate with magic, briefly incapacitating Wothis with a nightmare spell. However, Wothis retaliated violently, overpowering Merret and threatening his family further, and intending to kidnap Merret's infant son, a boy with strange magical abilities.

Suddenly, Lazav revealed himself from the corner where he had been sitting all along. He was deeply interested in the magical child, but he would let his parents raise him, albeit with some safety measures. Grimbly was sent away, forgetting the entire incident, while Lazav installed a secret Dimir agent named "Aunt Bea" in Merret's home to take care of the boy. Merret and Tashi's memories were also altered to forget the altercation with Grimbly and to accept Bea as a real member of the family.

Grimbly Wothis, the husband of Jitka, is imprisoned in Udzec, a massive facility. Jitka visits him, mentioning he got involved with the wrong sort, hinting at a problematic deal with Orzhov brokers. During her visit, a distraction occurs when the Azorius nullmages find a whiskey bottle hidden on her, planted by Kodolaag to divert attention and help him and Olrich sneak in. Despite the commotion caused by Jitka's attempt to defend herself, Kodolaag and Olrich manage to pass through the inspection to continue their mission, while Jitka remains detained for questioning about the bottle.[1]
