Anzrag, "the Rampage Mole," is a Gruul Mole God from Ravnica.
Description
Anzrag is a mole twice the size of an adult troll.[1] He has tiny eyes and his nose is a star-shaped flowerburst of fleshy tendrils. His flesh is etched with runic lines that gleam green with power. He has massive, spatulate front paws tipped in daggered claws that taper to a wicked point. His roars are deep, guttural sounds, loud enough to shake foundations.
Anzrag is a primal harvest god of planting and growth.[1][2] Not evil by nature, he is simply primal.[3] He is one of the Utmungr, the gods of the deep earth. According to the Gruul, Anzrag is the one who will tear the roots out of civilization from below and sow the world with life anew.
History
After months of unsuccessful attempts, the Zhur-Taa druid Yarus was able to summon Anzrag.[2] Afterward, giant and newly dug mole tunnels have been discovered below even the lowest layer of the undercity. Some Gruul are convinced that the tunnels are being dug in a deliberate pattern, but no one has been able to do a proper investigation into what exactly that pattern is.
One month before the events of Murders at Karlov Manor, Anzrag broke loose of guild control and wreaked havoc across the Ninth District.[4] Stopped by a team of investigators with the Ravnican Agency of Magicological Investigations, including Kellan, he was contained within an evidence capsule in the Agency's headquarters. He was to remain detained until the Agency could prove to the Boros Legion that he wouldn't rampage once released.
Before this could be done, he was released the day after the attempted assassination of Aurelia, wreaking havoc within the Agency's headquarters.[1] He killed at least four agents and injured more before he could be recaptured by Kaya Cassir.
Trivia
- Anzrag was originally conceived as female, leading to an accidental feminine pronoun in Episode 7: Rot Before Recovery.[3]
