Malcom Lee is a siren and a lifelong member of the Brazen Coalition of pirates on Ixalan.[1]
Description
Malcolm is a white-feathered siren.[2] He is naturally gifted in the art of navigation, and he supplements his natural gifts with celestialism, divination magic that derives information from the stars with the aid of charts, compasses, and astrolabes.[3][4][5][6] Malcolm is rarely seen away from his best friend, the irrepressible goblin pirate Breeches.[7]
Malcolm is skilled in dowsing, able to locate ore from a distance with his magic alone.[8]
History
Race for Orazca
Malcolm was hired by Captain Vraska to serve aboard the pirate ship Belligerent in search of the Immortal Sun, not knowing that she was a planeswalker planning to take it on behalf of Nicol Bolas. When the amnesiac Jace joined the Belligerent's crew, Malcolm informed him of their objective and the reason that the artifact was so coveted. When the River Heralds wrecked their boat, Vraska and Jace instructed Malcolm to fly up and watch for their signal so that the rest of the crew could come inland safely.
Malcolm and the rest of the pirate crew accompanied Vraska and Jace to the city of Orazca. Malcolm used his song to paralyze Huatli, Tishana, Vona, and Mavren Fein when they were fighting over the Immortal Sun, allowing Breeches time to attack Vona and keep the vampire from killing Huatli. After the Sun was conveyed away with the Planar Bridge, Jace said goodbye to Malcolm before planeswalking away.
After the planeswalkers left Ixalan, Malcolm and Breeches continued sailing on the Belligerent, gaining prestige in the Brazen Coalition. He was saddened to hear of his former captain's compleation and apparent death in the wake of New Phyrexia's Invasion of the Multiverse.
Lost Caverns of Ixalan
In 5 Dawn Era, Ripley Vance asked Malcolm and Breeches to investigate disappearances in the mining town of Downtown, which was under the Coalition's control.[9] As he served as the town's official emissary and owned shares in the mine, he eagerly obliged. Upon arrival, they found the town deserted. Delving into its mines with seven others, they were attacked by corpses of various miners and creatures animated by mycoids, before coming face to face with the entity that controlled them, the Mycotyrant.[8] Using Malcolm's hypnotic song, the duo escaped, delving further underground and luring the mycoids through Matzalantli to Ixalan's Core, where a pitched battle was taking place between Huatli's expedition party and vampire heretics led by Vito.[10] Eventually, Breeches destroyed the Mycotyrant with a powerful bomb, causing its subordinate mycoids to collapse. Malcolm and Breeches left the caverns, Malcolm intending to give his report before drinking his memories of the incident away.
After the pair returned to High and Dry, they were contacted by Vraska. They were overjoyed to see her alive. She and Jace had a plot involving an ancient vault on the plane of Thunder Junction, which had been newly connected to the Multiverse via the Omenpaths, and asked for Breeches and Malcolm's help, to which they agreed.
Thunder Junction
On Thunder Junction, Jace, disguised as Ashiok, had hired Oko to put together a band of outlaws from across the Multiverse to raid the vault. Malcolm joined the team as a spotter, and to secretly support Vraska, who had set herself up to be hired by Oko as well.[11]
Eventually, the team managed to secure the vault's key, and Oko opened it for Jace and Vraska.[12] Jace revealed himself and secured his prize, a young creature named Loot. However, he set off a trap that would cause the vault to collapse. With Kellan's backup, the team made it out safely. After Vraska's role in the job was complete, Breeches and Malcolm left the plane.
Planes visited
Though not a planeswalker, Malcolm has traveled to other worlds through Omenpaths.
