Silas Renn is a human, born on the shard of Esper (Alara). He is the heir of the House of Renn, one of the most influential families among the elite of Esper. He was also a member of the Seekers of Carmot and an enemy of Tezzeret.

History

When Tezzeret gained entry into the Vectis City Academy wishing to join the Seekers of Carmot, he repeatedly dueled Silas Renn.[1] Being defeated, Tezzeret's powers were considered substandard and not worthy to join the ranks of the Seekers, but this did not become common knowledge as Tezzeret killed Hiersearch Amalex Pannet and continued his stay at the academy. Silas was later granted the first ever created Etherium heart for becoming the youngest adept among the Seekers.[2]

In time, Tezzeret rose to prominence through other means, eventually attracting the interest of Nicol Bolas and being inducted into the Elder Dragon's covert organization, the Infinite Consortium. Tezzeret staged a takeover of that organization, and once empowered and with Bolas's attention diverted elsewhere, Tezzeret returned to the Seekers not as a supplicant, but as an executioner. In a single, brutal act of revenge, he murdered the entire sect, eliminating the new Hieresiarch and the whole Arcane Council. Silas Renn was the only member of the group who managed to survive Tezzeret's massacre, simply by not being present for the events at the Seekers' Sanctum. Tezzeret then took over the whole structure and made it his new fortress.[3]

In the Test of Metal, an empowered Tezzeret returned to the Sanctum Arcanum and met Silas Renn there. With the knowledge that Tezzeret would next head to the Crystal Labyrinth to seek out Kemuel, Silas went there before him, creating an army of zombies to block his path. In the fight against Tezzeret, Silas repeatedly used clockworking magic, and yet Tezzeret managed to gain the upper hand by opening a portal, slicing Renn in two parts - a wound that would have been instantly lethal to a normal man. Instead, Renn's undamaged etherium heart kept his body partially functional, and Tezzeret used his body to guide himself through the labyrinth. The body was later found by Nicol Bolas and stripped of etherium, then brought to Metal Island where Bolas killed him. However, this whole sequence was part of a fever dream by Tezzeret as he was being reconstituted by Bolas[4], and Tezzeret later explicitly thinks that Silas Renn is the only member of the Seekers of Carmot who is still alive.[3]
