Miri is a human tithe taker, part of the Orzhov Syndicate on the plane of Ravnica.
Description
As a tithe taker soldier, Miri wears gold-plated armor. This armor is significant as it not only protects her but also symbolizes her role and affiliation within the guild. However, at one point, Miri acquires Selesnyan silk robes. These are described as comfortable and contrasting with her usual armor, suggesting a stark difference in her appearance and possibly hinting at a hidden desire or fascination with something outside her guild's norms.
Miri values beauty and elegance, as seen in her appreciation for embroidered silks. She is resourceful, and adept at navigating the complexities of her Orzhov and Selesnyan lives, which includes bartering and adapting to unfamiliar rituals and expectations. Her ambition is evident in her efforts to secure better robes and in her dedication to achieving success within the Conclave.
Miri demonstrates skill in combat, as shown in her altercation with a citizen who refuses to pay tithes. Her ability to handle herself in such situations underscores her competence and readiness for her guild duties. Miri shows kindness and empathy towards others, particularly her podmates. Despite her immersion in Selesnyan life, Miri remains connected to her family, particularly her father, whom she seeks to impress and support.
History
Miri encountered her first refusal as a tithe taker when a citizen resisted the new 30% tithing rate and made threats, leading her to subdue him forcefully. Despite her father’s assurances, she struggled with the harsh realities of her job.
While performing her duties, Miri skimmed money from the tithes to support her financially troubled family, though it conflicted with her morals. To ease her conscience, she secretly worked as an assistant to a fleshmage, using part of her earnings to help citizens struggling with their tithes.
Amid her work, Miri witnessed the brutal punishment of a spy and impulsively took the spy's Selesnyan robes, feeling a mix of guilt and rebellion. When her father caught her wearing the robes, she fabricated a story about using them for an undercover mission to exploit Selesnya’s vulnerability. She admitted her flesh magic work to her father and convinced him of her loyalty and intentions to restore their family’s wealth, despite her inner conflict.
Miri's journey through the Selesnyan Conclave was transformative. Initially hesitant and homesick, she found solace in journaling, despite the challenges of the environment and the unfamiliar rituals. Her podmates became a source of support, especially Danika, who showed her kindness and solidarity.
During her time in the Conclave, Miri struggled with her assigned tasks, particularly the growth spell, where she initially failed to produce results. With encouragement from her peers and Danika's selfless act of swapping their plants, Miri finally succeeded, showcasing resilience and determination.
Her pivotal discovery of a vulnerable spot in the great Vitu-Ghazi tree could have changed her family's fortune drastically. However, influenced by her growing appreciation for Selesnyan values and the love within her family, Miri chose honesty and presented her father with a valuable artifact gifted by her mother instead.
Returning to her duties with a newfound sense of purpose, Miri balanced her responsibilities as a tithe collector with covert acts of generosity using her flesh magic earnings. Her actions, including creating a magical money tree for her father, reflected her commitment to both her family and her newfound principles.
