Lifetime Mending Era

Suniel the Woodwise is an Selesnyan druid and woodshaper on the plane of Ravnica. He sits on the council of high priests of the Conclave, along with Molander, Troslon, Alcarus, and Sadruna, and is famous for having been directly responsible for the creation of the three-dryad unity known as Trostani. [1]

History

Suniel shaped his home into a masterpiece of sculpted wood. Amid the angular bricks and hard edges of Ravnican architecture, the sensuous curves and organic flow of Suniel's home made it seem like something from another world. The druid had formed his house out of several nearby cedars, bending and calling their material to grow in particular ways pleasing to the eye and to the hand. It was said that Suniel's home was a visual representation of the Lattice of the Worldsoul, but the woodshaper humbly maintained that he only followed the silent guidance of Mat'Selesnya when creating his works.

Suniel was close to the three sister dryads Cim, Oba, and Ses before they merged into the communal being known as Trostani. He advised them to try to achieve direct contact with the Worldsoul while its presence appeared to be fading away. Suniel used his knowledge of woodshaping to compare the blending of wood and essence with that of blending the dryads' souls with the Worldsoul. When perfect unity happens, Suniel would draw power from the lifeforce of the wood, using that to help him shape it. Suniel'd theory was that if he connected the three dryads to a tree in the same way, they could draw power from it and use that power to move deeper and touch the Lattice of the Worldsoul.

After the three sisters agreed to the experiment, Suniel bound their essence within a tree, allowing them to seek the Lattice of Mat'Selesnya. In response, millions of strands of the Lattice reached out and wove themselves through them. The sisters reached out to each other through the Lattice and upon finding each other, they finally achieved contact with the Worldsoul. She spoke with a voice like a great bell, commanding them to grow a great army capable of stopping any threat on Ravnica, even that of the scheming dragon Niv-Mizzet. Mat'Selesnya told the sisters that all life returns to the Lattice, and that they should not covet their own particular lives as the ghost dealers of Orzhov would covet a purse of coins. They should not hold back in their sacrifice, but give freely to the whole, and spread that message far and wide.

Mat'Selesnya then completed Suniel's spell, bonding the three dryads to all trees of Ravnica, putting Selesnyan power in every root across the plane from which the new army could grow. Suniel witnessed the sisters being morphed into each other and the tree itself. Like a ball of writhing snakes, the roots began to cocoon and absorb the dryads, their small forms quickly pulled toward the trunks. Suniel struggled to pull them free, but despite his woodshaping magic, his attempts were futile. He could only claw at the glowing snarl of limbs and roots, and watch helplessly as the three sisters disappeared into the oaks.

In the great hall within Vitu-Ghazi, the high priests and dignitaries of Selesnya gathered. There, grown from the living wood of the World Tree, were the three dryads, magically materialized before a stunned crowd, sending a pulse throughout the Worldsoul to gather. No one in the guild had felt such a surge for a long time and hurried to the Conclave in great hope, to gaze upon their new guildmaster for the first time. When Suniel arrived there, he recognized Cim, the central figure of the three, but as soon as she spoke, he realized the Cim he had known was no more. The three who are one told the high priests that they were now Trostani - the Great Concourse between Mat'Selesnya and all who follow her will. Trostani come from the heart of the Lattice to alter the course of Selesnya forever, to lead them to a new age of glorious growth.
