Leighbet is a former Izzet inventor who discovered a way of administering electrical immunity.

Description

Appreance

Leighbet has brown skin, and is slender with frizzy hair, likely due to her frequent exposure to electrical shocks and arcane experiments. She has a tattoo over one eyebrow, and her appearance reflects her intense focus on her work, often ignoring personal upkeep in favor of her scientific pursuits. She tends to stick electrical conductors in her hair and forgets about them, leading to a slight accumulation of them.

After a Simic experiment, Leighbet's physical appearance changed drastically due to the experimental procedures she underwent. Initially human, she transforms into a monstrous creature with ashen gray skin, jagged teeth, and claws. This proved to be a temporary condition, and she eventually reverted back to her human form, although the mutation had left her with the essence of the creature inside her.

Personality

Leighbet is a determined and resourceful individual, known for her expertise in arcane science and her ambitious drive to rise above her current station. She is both pragmatic and daring, willing to navigate dangerous environments, such as the sewers of the Tenth District, to gather essential components for her experiments. Despite facing numerous challenges and setbacks, she maintains a tenacious spirit, driven by her desire to make groundbreaking discoveries and establish herself as a prominent figure in the scientific community.

History

Leighbet's journey was marked by significant adversity, including the loss of her position within the Izzet League due to a daring experiment gone wrong. Despite this setback, she refused to abandon her dreams, setting up an unsanctioned laboratory in the depths of the boiler pit beneath her apartment building. Here, she recruited Tamsyn Sweene, a seasoned blast-seeker, to assist her in conducting experiments that could change the course of arcane science.

Leighbet had a radical idea

Their collaboration led to a groundbreaking discovery involving rift-tainted magic that rendered subjects impervious to electricity. This achievement held the potential to revolutionize the understanding of magical resilience and open doors to new avenues of research. However, faced with the risk of exposure and the threat it posed to their careers, Leighbet and Tamsyn made a controversial decision to prevent their findings from reaching the wider world, ensuring the secrecy of their breakthrough by a drastic act of killing their test subjects. Leighbet changed her mind about this though, refusing to kill the five humans and goblins just to secure their invention, but by that time, Tamsyn had already murdered them.

To pay off Tamsyn, Leighbet signed up for dangerous experiments at the Simic Crucible and encountered unforeseen consequences. The experimental procedures conducted by the Simic biomancers resulted in a transformation that turned her into a hybrid creature, part human and part-monster. This transformation was involuntary and traumatic, pushing her into survival mode as she navigated the horrors of the laboratory and the subsequent flight into the sewers.

Tamsyn, initially appearing as an ally or mentor figure, turned out to be a deceptive shapeshifter affiliated with the Dimir guild. She manipulated Leighbet, revealing her true intentions only when it was too late for Leighbet to turn back. This betrayal added to Leighbet's sense of isolation and danger. Despite the odds stacked against her, Leighbet managed to use her intellect and newfound abilities to confront and ultimately kill Tamsyn in a battle within the sewer environment.

After defeating Tamsyn, Leighbet reclaimed her identity and secured her discoveries, vowing to protect them from falling into the wrong hands. She returned to her laboratory with a renewed sense of purpose, driven not just by financial necessity but by a desire to prove herself and safeguard her innovations.
