Janik is a shaman of the Zhur-Taa clan of the Gruul on the plane of Ravnica, and part of Nikya's war party.
History
After Massacre Girl led a Rakdos massacre of a Selesnyan vernadi nearby, Nikya of the Old Ways declared war on the Rakdos, swearing revenge over the perceived killing of the Gruul infant Zi. None of the Gruul knew that Zi had survived the massacre, and was in the care of his uncle Ruzi.
Nikya bid Janik be part of her war party, but when they left, the shaman Kal, who had not been included in the band, tracked them from a distance. Despite Kal's stealth, Janik noticed something behind them and leveled a spear at whatever it was scrabbling over some rubble. When Kal's head popped up over the edge, Janik started as he had almost skewered his clanmate. Angered, Janik yelled at Kal and threatened him that Nikya would kill him for breaking the rules of the war party. Before any of this could play out, however, the Rakdos attacked.
Janik shoved Kal to the ground and sprinted off toward the fight. The bellows of Rakdos ogres filled the air along with Gruul war cries and howls of pain. Rakdos were everywhere, pouring out from the cracks and holes of the rubble like ants, but Janik's clan looked to have the upper hand. He held his own for a while, but the presence of a Rix Maadi bloodwitch and several unleashed demons put the entire attack at risk, but then something happened that surprised everyone.
With a blast of fire, Kal incinerated a grinning flailer that had hooked his leg. The ogre's arms and legs flew apart, leaving spiraling trails of smoke in the air. But that was not the end. Arcs of bounding energy flew from Kal and plowed into the demons like a blazing hammer that turned them into shrieking plumes of fire, then overflowed across the earth. Bolts of flame reduced the rest of the Rakdos to bone and ash in a blinding flash. Kal passed out, having saved the day, and whatever sour words Janik would have had for him, were erased by the shaman's heroic stand.
