Liric teaches at Hearth Fountain Academic, a tuition-free school. He is also a former Dimir agent.

History

On the last day of the school semester, the Dimir agent Liric sat down to prepare for his exit from his guild. While he was wondering about his next actions, he was approached by one of his pupils - the goblin Skrygix. She gave Liric a cute drawing and wished him a good summer. Liric was unsure if he would ever be back to the campus he loved.

Liric then took a zeppelid to Ismeri, where he grew up. He recalled kissing his first girl, Mareena there. Liric waited until dark and then switched out his professor's cardigan with a Dimir guildcloak, which made him almost invisible. He walked into a Dimir operations house, a place where he had never been before. He traced a sign on a magic string in his pocket and a door opened before him. He stepped through and uttered the passphrase, which summoned a homunculus to greet him. It sent a memory warden's prope against Liric, but he warded it off with his string.

Liric told the memory warden that he had solved the puzzle, which opened another secret passageway for him. He knew then to his relief that he had not been recognized, and descended the stairs to meet with the Dimir interpreter. The interpreter was Liric's father, manipulating a wall of sand. This wall was made up of collected memories, assembled from those stolen by the Dimir into a projection of sorts, which Liric's father was trying to make sense of.

Liric had not seen his father since he had been promoted to a Dimir remainder. This had happened in a Duskmantle atrium, with his father and a guildmage as the only witnesses. The guildmage had passed a coin stamped with Lazav's likeness over Liric's strand and sealed it end to end. Only agents of the highest order could use a strand transformed in this fashion; it was a talent that could not be taught. Liric's father had wept with pride, overwhelmed by knowing his son would never toil like a bookkeeper in the bowels of the Undercity. Liric could walk the face of Ravnica unseen, mold the city's future as the Dimir directed, and no one would ever know who he was.

And seven days ago, Liric had tracked down the guildmage who had performed the ceremony, and blanked out his mind, erasing any memory of himself there. Liric's father explained how the sand wall was showing him images of Niv-Mizzet and Ral Zarek's forays into the Implicit Maze. While his father was distracted, Liric passed his magic strand slowly under his thumb, activating a series of glyphs, erasing his father's memories of him.

When the job was done, his father turned around and apologized. He had forgotten someone was there with him, someone he'd never met before. Liric excused himself and left the building with the knowledge that nobody in the Dimir would now ever remember that he had existed. He destroyed his magic string and looked forward to returning to the campus of Hearth Fountain Academic, where he would remain as a simple teacher, a Dimir agent no more.
