Ezrim is a guildless Archon from Ravnica. He is the chief of the Ravnican Agency of Magicological Investigations.[1]
Description
Ezrim is a massive archon, stern, humorless, and uncompromising.[1][2] He's a brilliant analytical mind, above reproach, and not bound by guild affiliation. He carries a massive lance and wears a long, elaborate cape.[3]
Ezrim's mount resembles a mix between an ox and a lion with long talons, horns, and two pairs of feathered wings.[3] He and his mount are separate beings, though they function as a single unit.[4][5] His mount is never out of arm's reach, and may not be capable of being so.[6]
History
Though he has always been Guildless, Ezrim was once aligned with the Azorius but found the paperwork far too tedious and the other Azorius-aligned archons insufferable.[7] He founded a minor truth cult dedicated to his twin ideals of truth and clarity.[1] For centuries, the cult slowly grew until it was moderately sized. As an archon with several known associates among the Azorius Senate, Lavinia always assumed he would one day join the Senate proper again.
After New Phyrexia's Invasion of the Multiverse in 10,079 ZC, the cult rapidly received new cases and new members, becoming the Ravnican Agency of Magicological Investigations.[1] Most of his Azorius associates followed him, and he isn't shy about luring promising candidates away from the guild to join his agency.[2] However, Ezrim insists on maintaining his Agency's autonomy and will sometimes refuse to take on cases if he thinks they're handling too much guild-related work.
A year and some months following the Invasion, he was present at Karlov Manor when Zegana was assassinated, and assisted in the investigation following, though he avoided questioning by the Azorius.[8] After the Dimir assassin Etrata was arrested as a suspect, he felt there was more to uncover, and enlisted Kaya Cassir to lead the investigation.[9] When the Gruul mole god Anzrag escaped his containment, Ezrim challenged the god before it was recaptured by Kaya.[5] He was later invited to Vitu-Ghazi by Alquist Proft to learn the truth of the murders, where the detective revealed that Oba, the central dryad of Trostani, had organized them in retribution for those she considered traitors to the plane during the Invasion.[10] When Oba attacked the guild leaders, Ezrim was captured, but was freed after Oba was defeated by Kaya and Etrata.[11][12]
