The Ismeri Library is one of the largest and most renowned libraries on Ravnica, housing vast collections of knowledge that attract scholars, students, and the simply curious from every corner of the Tenth District.
Description
Located in Precinct Five of Ravnica City, the Ismeri Library is officially a guildless institution, open to all citizens at any hour of the day or night. Its towering stacks hold hundreds of thousands of books, scrolls, and manuscripts that cover nearly every imaginable subject — from arcane theory and natural sciences to city records, histories, and obscure philosophical treatises. Many students and independent researchers spend long days and nights here, poring over dusty tomes in pursuit of answers and inspiration.[1]
While the library appears neutral and open, it is quietly maintained and operated by House Dimir. Beneath the surface of ordinary scholarship, the library functions as one of Dimir's most important hubs for covert communication and information gathering. Hidden among the shelves are secret messages that Dimir agents encode using both magical enchantments and subtle mundane methods. To retrieve a single assignment or target, an operative may have to piece together fragments scattered throughout multiple volumes or scrolls, ensuring that casual visitors never notice the hidden flow of clandestine information.[2]
More than simple hidden notes, the Ismeri Library is woven through with layers of intricate codes, ciphers, and magical wards that conceal or protect sensitive secrets. Only those with the proper training, passwords, or enchantments can unlock these messages without triggering countermeasures. While the librarians appear to be helpful scholars or quiet scribes, many are Dimir agents, silently observing who reads what and reporting this intelligence back to the guild's hidden leadership.[2]
Despite its secret purpose, the Ismeri Library remains a beloved landmark for ordinary Ravnicans who rely on its open stacks for study and self-improvement. Within its halls, students from the Izzet League might rub elbows with Boros patrols researching law, or Orzhov clerks verifying old contracts. Many find the quiet halls and musty alcoves ideal for solitary work, blissfully unaware that the same shadows that shield their privacy also cloak some of Ravnica's deepest conspiracies.
There is a ghost haunting the history section of the Ismeri Library. During its first appearance, it was mute, but in subsequent appearances, it could speak and was looking for someone.[2]
