Kefnet was the ibis-headed Amonkhetgod of knowledge, revered by the people of Naktamun as the embodiment of intellect, wisdom, and mental discipline.[1] Followers saw him as the ultimate teacher and guardian of secrets, whose insight protected the city and helped mortals unlock their hidden potential through study and magical practice.
With his ibis head and glorious wings, he represented intellect and the magic of the mind. Kefnet oversaw the Trial of Knowledge (the second trial) and judged worthiness based on mental prowess.[2] He believed that knowledge is power, and his greatest weapon was his mental acumen and magical ability. Kefnet was also the god who was responsible for the maintenance of the Hekma, drawing power from the Luxa to maintain its water.[3]
History
Hour of Devastation
During the Hour of Promise, Kefnet was killed by the Scorpion God, alongside Oketra, while trying to protect the mortals of Naktamun and repair the Hekma.[4] When the Hekma fell, Kefnet fought valiantly to defend the city from the desert horrors and the chaos unleashed by Nicol Bolas, but even his vast knowledge and magical power could not save him from the Scorpion God's assault.
Kefnet was zombified and remade by Bolas as one of his God-Eternal servants. During the War of the Spark on Ravnica, he returned to the battlefield as an undead enforcer of Bolas's will, striking fear into planeswalkers and citizens alike. Ral Zarek sheared off Kefnet's right arm with a massive lightning bolt, but the ibis-headed god pressed on relentlessly. Ultimately, he was destroyed when the resurrected Niv-Mizzet incinerated him with the full force of his arcane power.[5][6]
Inspiration
Kefnet appears to be based on Thoth, the Egyptian god of Knowledge and Magic, who is also often depicted with the head of an Ibis.
