Reopening of Ixalan's Core The Murders The Vault Heist

The Murders at Karlov Manor, often just called "the Murders", was a major criminal investigation in Ravnica in 4564 AR, centered around the assassination of multiple high-profile guild figures and the eventual unmasking of Oba, the central dryad of Trostani, as the mastermind. The events took place during a rising crime wave following the New Phyrexian Invasion and involved many of the plane's most influential leaders.[1][2]

Description

A year and some months after the invasion, Anzrag, a Gruul god, broke loose of guild control and was stopped by the Ravnican Agency of Magicological Investigations.[1] One month later, during a party at Karlov Manor hosted by Teysa Karlov, Zegana was assassinated, and Etrata was arrested as a suspect.[1][3][4] Three days later, Teysa was also assassinated.[5] Kaya Cassir took over the investigation, while Alquist Proft freed Etrata to help him pursue her innocence.

The case escalated as Massacre Girl attempted to assassinate Proft but was stopped by Etrata,[6] Krenko kidnapped Kylox, who was then accidentally killed by a brainwashed attacker who was attempting to kill Krenko.[7] Then Anzrag escaped custody, rampaging through Agency headquarters.[8] Judith captured Agrus Kos in an attempt to frame Rakdos, her own guildmaster.

Proft and Kaya pieced together that the murders were committed by brainwashed citizens under the influence of magically cultivated plants whose pollen induced a fugue state. The plants could be grown anywhere in Ravnica via the roots of Vitu-Ghazi, pointing to a member of the Selesnya Conclave. Proft gathered the guild leaders at Vitu-Ghazi and revealed the killer as Oba, the central dryad of Trostani.[2] Oba confessed to targeting Zegana for experimenting with Phyrexian oil, Teysa for her perceived collaboration as a double agent, and Krenko for profiting from the war.[9][10]

Oba attacked the assembly, killing Tolsimir Wolfblood, but was ultimately captured by Kaya and Etrata with the aid of Teysa’s ghost.[11] In the aftermath, Trostani withdrew from leadership, leaving Emmara Tandris in charge. Teysa resumed leadership of the Orzhov as a ghost and formed a new ghost council. Proft later discovered Niv-Mizzet’s Omenpath Project and offered his services to the dragon.[12]
