The Murders The Vault Heist Theft of Maha's Egg

The Vault Heist was a large-scale robbery on the plane of Thunder Junction in 4564 AR involving multiple criminal factions, the Sterling Company, and several Planeswalkers. The target was the legendary treasure vault Maag Taranau, which ultimately proved to house the Fomori child Loot in suspended animation. The operation culminated in a chaotic three-way battle and ended with Jace Beleren and Vraska escaping with Loot, while the vault itself launched into the sky with Akul trapped inside before later crashing to the surface.[1]

Description

Following the opening of the Omenpaths, Niv-Mizzet tasked Ral Zarek with establishing communication relays on Thunder Junction and other planes.[2] While in Prosperity, Ral recruited Kellan as his bodyguard. Meanwhile, Jace Beleren, disguised as Ashiok, hired Oko to retrieve the contents of Maag Taranau, providing him with a crew of outlaws including Vraska, Annie Flash, Kaervek, Satoru Umezawa, Breeches, Malcolm, Eriette, Gisa Cecani, Geralf Cecani, Rakdos, and Tinybones.[3]

The vault could only be opened with a single key divided into six pieces. Bertram Graywater of the Sterling Company held the final piece until Oko’s gang stole it.[3] Kaervek identified the artifact as predating the Thran and Phyrexian civilizations and potentially more dangerous than its wielders understood.[4] The Hellspurs, led by Akul, seized the key in a confrontation but Oko stole it back during a Sterling–Hellspur shootout.[5]

Oko infiltrated the Hellspurs’ base, Tarnation, with Kellan, Annie, and Vraska, intentionally allowing their capture so Akul would combine all six pieces into the complete key. Oko tipped off the Sterling Company, using their attack as cover to reclaim the key and abandon Kellan.[6] Kellan was freed by Ral, who convinced him to help secure the vault’s contents so they could be hidden off-plane.

Multiple factions—the Sterling Company, the Hellspurs, and Oko’s crew—converged on Maag Taranau.[1] Inside, Annie spotted traps that Umezawa and Tinybones disabled, while Kaervek dismantled a protective ward. Kellan and Ral intercepted Oko, leading to a fight over the key until “Ashiok” incapacitated them. Once inside, “Ashiok” revealed himself as Jace, who shattered Loot’s stasis pod. Vraska attempted to petrify Oko, but he escaped. The vault launched into the sky with Akul trapped inside before later falling back to the surface.[7] Jace and Vraska planeswalked away with Loot.[1][8]

In the aftermath, Oko’s gang disbanded, Kellan embraced his fae powers to save Annie from Akul by compelling the dragon into the collapsing vault, and Kellan invited Amalia to join him in exploring and mapping Thunder Junction.[1]
