The Reopening of Ixalan's Core was a major Omenpath Era conflict in 4563 AR that drew together explorers, conquerors, and opportunists from across Ixalan and several other planes.[1][2][3] For the first time since ancient times, the long-sealed Core became accessible after the Phyrexian invasion destabilized the plane, revealing entrances across Ixalan's surface. Competing expeditions from the Sun Empire, the Legion of Dusk, and the Brazen Coalition — as well as newly discovered native Oltec peoples — fought for survival and control beneath the world’s crust. The conflict pitted mortals against ancient powers, including the bat god Aclazotz and the fungal hivemind known as the Mycotyrant, whose clashes reshaped political and military alliances across the plane and beyond.
Description
Following the devastation of the New Phyrexian Invasion, entrances to the plane's Core were discovered across the surface of Ixalan.[4][5] The death of the Deeproot Tree prompted thousands of River Heralds to gather in Matzalantli,[6] which became a rallying point for surface factions descending into the underground realm. Expeditions from the Sun Empire, Legion of Dusk, and Brazen Coalition converged on this subterranean world, encountering the long-isolated Oltec civilization for the first time in recorded history.[7]
The Sun Empire force, led by Huatli and including Quintorius Kand, Inti, Caparocti Sunborn, and Wayta, entered the Core via Orazca and advanced through Matzalantli toward the Inner Sun.[8][7] In parallel, a thirty-strong Legion of Dusk detachment commanded by Vito Quijano de Pasamonte sought to free the imprisoned god Aclazotz.[8] This mission brought them into direct conflict with their allies when Vito sacrificed Bartolomé del Presidio to awaken the deity, prompting cartographer Amalia Benavides Aguirre to defect to the Sun Empire's cause.[7][9]
At the same time, nine Brazen Coalition pirates under Malcolm Lee and Breeches tracked the Mycotyrant to the Core while investigating the destruction of the mining settlement of Downtown.[8] The Mycotyrant pursued them deeper underground, expanding its fungal domain as it advanced.[7][9]
Within the Core, these rival forces collided amid hostile terrain and ancient magic. Aclazotz transformed his followers into batlike demons in a bid to extinguish Chimil, the Inner Sun, while the Mycotyrant launched a massive assault on the Oltec population.[9][10] In the fighting, Huatli killed Vito, severing the Legion's leadership in the depths, and Breeches destroyed the Mycotyrant’s central nexus body. Despite these blows, both the god and the hive mind escaped intact to the surface. Among the notable casualties were Inti, Clavileño, and Vito himself.[10]
After the battle, Kellan and Amalia departed via an Omenpath to Ravnica,[10] while Quint made the surprising discovery of a Coin Empire vessel preserved in the Core's depths.[10] In the aftermath, the Mycotyrant overran the coastal town of Sunray Bay and set sail for High and Dry,[10] and Aclazotz secured passage to Torrezon to pursue an alliance with Vona de Iedo.[10]
On the surface, a political settlement was reached between Caztaca Huicintli, Elenda of Garrano, and Beckett Brass, establishing an alliance that bridged the Sun Empire, a faithful Legion faction, and the Brazen Coalition.[11] Meanwhile, Malcolm and Breeches, upon returning topside, confirmed the Mycotyrant's survival and were recruited by Vraska for operations on Thunder Junction.[12]
