The Supreme Verdict was a defining magical trial on Ravnica that restored the Guildpact in living form through the test of the Implicit Maze — a city-wide contest designed to judge the worthiness of the ten guilds and their champions. Amid storm and conflict in the Forum of Azor, this final judgment bound the fractured guilds to a new order under Jace Beleren, who emerged as the Living Guildpact.[1]
Description
The Supreme Verdict was the pivotal magical trial that tested the ten guilds of Ravnica through the challenge of the Implicit Maze. Devised by Azor I, the ancient lawmage and original author of the Guildpact, the Assessment was set in motion about sixty years after the Guildpact’s dissolution, when the Forum of Azor and its hidden executor — the Bailiff — awakened to preserve Ravnica’s fragile balance.[1]
Storm spells cast by Izzet mages, including the maze runner Ral Zarek, had darkened the skies and summoned heavy rain as the maze runners converged on the Forum one by one. These chosen champions — among them Tajic, Teysa Karlov, Emmara Tandris, and others — navigated the hidden path of leylines threading the city’s districts, forced to compete and cooperate to prove their guilds’ worth.[1]
When conflict erupted at the Forum’s dais, the Bailiff delivered the Supreme Verdict: each runner was granted the power to invoke the final judgment that could either condemn or preserve the city’s future. To avert chaos, Jace Beleren magically linked the minds of all ten runners, uniting their perspectives at the cost of nearly unraveling his mind. Seeing this sacrifice, the Bailiff declared Jace the new Guildpact — a living arbiter who would bind the law once more in mortal form. In an explosion of white light, Jace was imbued with the power of the Living Guildpact.[1]
The Supreme Verdict foiled Lazav’s plot to weaponize the trial against the other guilds and laid the groundwork for a new era. The guilds began construction of the Embassy of the Guildpact, while Jace gathered trusted advisors — with Lavinia as the first among them — and honored Emmara Tandris’s request to erase her knowledge of planeswalkers. Through this singular verdict, Azor’s ancient design was fulfilled: the chaos of conflict gave way to renewed order, and Ravnica’s law found a voice once more.[1]
