Kallist Rhoka was a friend of Jace Beleren and boyfriend of Liliana Vess on Ravnica.

Description

Kallist was of middling height, pale and slender, with brown hair and bright blue eyes. He possessed skills with both bladed weapons, such as broadswords, and with illusion magic. Although he was in love with Liliana, the feelings were not fully reciprocated. While he was not a cruel man in a direct sense, he was quite merciless to his opponents, consistently leaving no surviving enemies in his wake. He made sure to kill even unconscious, cornered, and wounded opponents whenever he had the chance.[1]

History

Kallist met the planeswalker Jace Beleren on Ravnica while working the the Infinite Consortium. Together, they broke into the house of Ronia Hesset and discovered she had betrayed the organization, skimming money off their business deals. After fighting their way out of her manor, with many cuts and bruises, Kallist and Jace agreed to teach each other their specialties to improve the outcomes on future consortium missions. Kallist started to teach Jace lessons in swordplay, while Jace taught Kallist illusion magic, and they slowly became friends. When Jace fell out of favor with the Consortium due to failures in large part actually because of the planeswalkers Baltrice and Tezzeret themselves rather than Jace, the mind-mage nevertheless suffered harsh punishments, which then started to spill over on Kallist too due to their friendship and his aid in getting Jace to a healer. Jace decided to desert the consortium and brought Kallist with him to ensure he would not be further punished.[1]

While on the run, they traveled to the Lurias district, where they met Liliana Vess, another planeswalker. While she pretended their meeting was more or less a coincidence, she was still working for the Consortium. She endeared herself to both men, and when Jace and Liliana started dating, though, Kallist left them alone, hiring up as a dock guard commander. It was only when Liliana alerted the Infinite Consortium of Jace's location that Kallist became involved once more, protecting Jace from his attackers and even killing his former colleague, the centaur Xalmarias. Jace hatched a scheme then to transfer Kallist's memories with him off-plane and find a new body to host them, but when he attempted to subsume his friend's being into his mind, he lost control of the process, and the two men ended up switching memories.[1]

Afterwards, while Jace's mind in Kallist's body moved to the Favarial district and set up an apartment there, Kallist's mind in Jace's body dated Liliana for three months. When Kallist-Jace asked her to become more serious about it, she turned him down. Heartbroken, he drank himself into a stupor, and during the night, both he and Liliana were taken by Semner's thugs. Semner wanted to know the location of Jace, his true target, unaware of the mind-switch. When the crime boss left, Liliana and Kallist-Jace killed the thugs guarding them and followed Semner to the district of Favarial, where they met Jace-Kallist just as Semner's thugs attacked him. During the struggle, Liliana cast a stupor spell on Kallist-Jace, and when Jace-Kallist was stabbed in the heart and killed by Semner, Jace's mind returned to his body. Overwhelmed, Jace fled the apartment while Liliana angrily raised Kallist from the dead to avenge his death, tearing out Semner's innards with his teeth and fingers. Liliana then ended the spell that gave Kallist unlife, and stayed with the body in mourning until Jace, now returned. Together, they set out to avenge his death.[1]
