Izoni is an elven champion of the Golgari Swarm on Ravnica. She is the current de facto guildmaster representative of the Golgari, while they regain their strength after the Phyrexian decimation of their ranks.
Description
Izoni is an elf woman with dark skin.[1] Her face is painted with a white spider's head mask and she wears leather topped with tatters that emulate spiderwebs. She carries a barbed spear. She is immune to poisons, natural and unnatural drugs, and possibly even phyresis, which could explain how she survived the Phyrexian Invasion when most Golgari did not.[2] She is known for her ability to control insects and spiders, and she is never encountered without the company of one or more swarms of insects crawling over and around her. When she walks, she appears to glide over the ground.
History
Izoni became Matka of the Devkarin after the suspicious death of her predecessor, Zdenia.[3]
During the War of the Spark, Izoni was present in the Golgari meeting with Kaya's group as one of the members who could take over Golgari's leadership;[4] when Vraska showed up and reclaimed her leadership, Izoni was the most begrudging to accept her authority.[5]
Feeling threatened by Izoni's lust for power, Vraska tricked the Devkarin huntmaster Myczil Savod Zunich and the shaman Cevraya into thinking that Izoni had tried to kill Myczil with poisonous spiders.[6] Both Myzcil and Cevraya consequently accepted the protection of Vraska.
Murders at Karlov Manor
After New Phyrexia's invasion of Ravnica resulted in the deaths of many Golgari and the shifting of the undercity, Izoni was the first to denounce Vraska as guildmaster, leading the rest of the guild's factions to follow her.[7] Despite how the Golgari were shunned by the rest of Ravnica, she refused to renounce her guild, confident that they would one day reclaim their spot among the rest of Ravnica's guilds — with her as guildmaster. She sent her spiders to gather information for her as she waited for the opportune moment to make her move.
Aware that her guild was in an especially precarious position, Izoni didn't attend Teysa Karlov's party the next year and was not present for the murder of Zegana.[1] She used her spiders to monitor the investigation as it progressed, and was eventually paid a visit by the detective Alquist Proft, who wanted her to analyze a chemical he believed was related to the case. She concluded that it was derived from a living thing, but not something that was native to Ravnica. Proft realized that their conversation was being spied on, and ran after the suspect, but was knocked out by an unseen force. After he returned to consciousness, he thanked Izoni for her help and left.
She was later invited to Vitu-Ghazi by Proft to learn the truth of the murders, where the detective revealed that Trostani had organized them in retribution for those she considered traitors to the plane during the Invasion.[8] When Oba attacked the guild leaders, Izoni fought back instead of running away.[9]
