The Hellspurs are the most ferocious gang of outlaws on Thunder Junction.[1][2]
Description
The Hellspurs feature the most hard-boiled and violent bandits of the plane. They integrate the natural magic of the land directly into their bodies.[3] Among the members of the gang are Cactusfolk, Giants, Humans, Minotaurs, Orochi, Skeletons, Viashino, Zombies, creatures with flaming hair and other nightmarish creatures. Some have burning lava as skins or wear iron masks. They heavily rely on the use of Thunder magic and readily use fire magic and necromancy. They tend to wear black and red cloth.
The Hellspurs were led by the scorpion dragon Akul, with at least seven others in his inner circle including Twist Fandango.[4] The gang is headquartered in the city of Tarnation, built around the vault Maag Taranau. Its location was kept secret by killing those outside the Hellspurs who knew of it.[2] Within the city, only Hellspurs were allowed and disputes were often settled with duels.
History
The Hellspurs sought the riches of Maag Taranau, the legendary treasure vault at the center of the plane. They built the town of Tarnation to guard it.
After the Freestriders robbed Akul and the Hellspurs, the scorpion dragon spent weeks tracking them down and killing those who got in his way.[4] When the remaining members relented and returned what they had stolen, Akul attacked them regardless, almost killing Annie Flash's nephew Tommy with his venom, inflicting pain that would last the rest of his life.
Around 4564 AR, Akul and his gang attacked a carriage transport, killing a courier named Archie Dixon and two Sterling Company guards, to retrieve the final piece of the key to the vault that he was missing.[1]
The planeswalker Oko and his gang, including Annie Flash, infiltrated Tarnation in an attempt to steal Akul's key pieces.[4] They were captured by the Hellspurs, and Akul confronted them in prison, taking the final key piece for himself and completing the true key to Maag Taranau. However, before leaving them to their fate, Akul was challenged to a duel by Kellan, one of the thieves. With his honor at stake, Akul accepted.
Akul had the upper hand in the duel and eventually pinned Kellan in a dangerous position, but they were interrupted when mercenaries from the Sterling Company, who had been tipped off by Oko before his arrival, attacked Tarnation. One of their thundershots broke the necklace on which Akul wore the key, and it was stolen by Oko. The Hellspurs were ultimately defeated by the Sterling mercenaries.[5] Nonetheless, Akul pursued Oko to the vault, leading the few remaining Hellspurs into a battle with his gang. During the fight, Oko opened the vault for his benefactor, a disguised Jace Beleren. Jace took a piece of treasure from the vault, setting off a trap, and planeswalked away. Akul, for his part, was defeated by Rakdos in single combat and later mind controlled by Kellan to return to the vault as it launched into the sky.[6]
