As she came into her adulthood, she was granted the title of warrior-poet by the emperor. Yolotzin was a brilliant poet, her lyric precise and soft, and for her life she was the imperial conscience. However, her poetry was a long revenge: when Yolotzin passed, the empire mourned. Tears filled the streets, and the emperor was said to wander the halls of Tocatli, his voice reduced to a moan as he searched for Yolotzin's ghost to beg just a stanza more. Yolo is a Nahuatl word meaning "skilled" or "intelligent," and the suffix -tzin shows appreciation.
