Captain Ripley Vance is a pyromancer and mage-pirate operating on Ixalan.
History
Once commanding her galleon, Captain Ripley Vance gained a fearsome reputation as a pyromantic mage-pirate.[1] Over time, she collected the cannons from every vessel she defeated, eventually burdening her ship, the Leviathan's Wrath, with their immense weight. As her success made captaining a ship impractical, Vance sought a new domain: a coastal cliff marked by a natural lava flow. Using her artillery, she blasted the cliffside to create a fortress she named Spitfire Bastion. Located on a sizeable island off the Sun Coast between High and Dry and Ixalan, Spitfire Bastion has become a favored stop for members of the Brazen Coalition, providing supplies and a place to rest. However, ships may only dock there with Captain Vance’s permission; those who cross her face the relentless firepower of the many cannons guarding every approach.
Following the New Phyrexian Invasion, Ripley Vance was appointed to oversee Sunray Bay, the Brazen Coalition’s principal port on Ixalan and the region’s largest populated settlement.[2][3][4] After the mysterious disappearance of the nearby town of Downtown in 4563 AR, Vance dispatched the town’s official representative, Malcolm Lee, to investigate.[2] Subsequently, Sunray Bay fell under the control of the Mycotyrant, and Captain Vance’s current whereabouts or fate remain unknown.[5]
