The Ancient One was one of the original Deep Gods of Ixalan's Core.[1] Killed and usurped by Aclazotz before he could emerge, he is now a Spirit God.[2]

History

The Ancient One was originally one of the Deep Gods of the core, a Black-aligned "Ojer" with a forgotten name.[3] Ojer Axonil's nephew, he is likely a child of Ojer Taq and Ojer Pakpatiq or Ojer Kaslem.[1] Just before his emergence at the dawning of the Fifth Age, the mortal being who would become Aclazotz slew and ate him, usurping his place in the pantheon.

Inspiration

The Ancient One's design of a spirit emerging from a dinosaur's skull is likely based on the Vision Serpent of Maya mythology, which appears as the spirit of a god exiting from a serpent's jaws.

Ojer is a Kʼicheʼ Maya word referring to the past, used to mean "ancient" or to refer to ancestors.[4] As his proper name is unknown, "The Ancient One" may be intended as a direct translation of Ojer.
