Yolotzin's village was taken in conquest and her family killed. She was taken back to the capital because she knew how to speak the Sun Empire language and her voice was beautiful. As she came into her adulthood, she was granted the title of warrior-poet by the emperor. Yolotzin was a brilliant poet, her lyric precise and soft, and for her life she was the imperial conscience. However, her poetry was a long revenge: when Yolotzin passed, the empire mourned. Tears filled the streets, and the emperor was said to wander the halls of Tocatli, his voice reduced to a moan as he searched for Yolotzin's ghost to beg just a stanza more. Yolo is a Nahuatl word meaning "skilled" or "intelligent," and the suffix -tzin shows appreciation. |
